What Is Oil of Oregano?
It seems there is a lot of confusion about the different types of Oil
of Oregano. We hope to clear this up. Oregano is in the Labiatea
family, (mint) and closely related to basil and marjoram. This is according to
one of the leading publications on horticulture, "The Hortus Third
Edition", published by Cornell University. According to our distributor in
the Middle East, the horticultural species is Orgianum. Generally
speaking, Compactum is typically an oregano plant that has pale green
oval shaped leaves and grows to approximately 30 cms in height; it has a sweet
and spicy flavor. This type of oregano is generally grown on the west part of
the Aegean coast of Turkey.
This plant is most acceptable as a kitchen herb. The
oil extracted is parallel with marjoram, which is in the same family.
Carvacrol, (which is the active ingredient making it’s antiseptic
properties), levels vary, but are said not to be higher than 60% depending on
the harvest, location and distillation methods. The Vulgare on the other
hand is the family name given to those plants that have dark green small leaves
on the top as well as on the stem of the plant. The flower is much sharper and
potent. Grows up to 3000 meters and grows mainly on the south coast of Turkey.
Carvacrol has remarkable effects against
all types of microbes such as bacteria, virus, fungus and parasites.
Synthetic phenol, also known as carbolic acid, a strong antiseptic,
was for much of the 20th century the standard by which all other
antiseptics were measured. Yet research shows the “killing action”
of naturally occuring carvacrol is superior to phenol -- it is
unmatched in its antimicrobial actions. For example, in 1994, a
scientific team at the National Institute of Pediatrics in Mexico
published research showing that oregano had superior killing effects
on giardia, a protozoan creating distressing bowel infections.
Oregano tested superior even to tinidazol, the drug commonly used
to treat giardia infections.
It takes 100 lbs. of oregano plants to make 1 lb. of the essential oil
of wild oregano. This concentrated natural oil is very powerful.
The oil of oregano contains over 50 compounds which possess
antimicrobial actions, although carvacrol is the main one. In addition,
the oil of oregano has excellent antioxidant properties, notably
labiatic and p-hydroxy-hydrocaffeic acid.
Joy Of The Mountains
So remarkable are the healing effects of oregano (the true species),
that for centuries the Greeks and Romans made extensive
use of this herb, especially for infections. Oregano is derived from
a Grecian word, meaning “the joy of the mountains.”

Hemp Seed Nutrition (Excerpted from Hempseed Nutrition by: Lynn Osburn)
Cannabis hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life. No other single plant source provides complete protein in such an easily digestible form, nor has the oils essential to life in as perfect a ratio for human health and vitality.
Hempseed is the highest of any plant in essential fatty acids. Hempseed oil is among the lowest in saturated fats at 8% of total oil volume. The oil pressed from hempseed contains 55% linoleic acid (LA) and 25% linolenic acid (LNA). Only flax oil has more linolenic acid at 58%, but hempseed oil is the highest in total essential fatty acids at 80(4) of total oil volume.

"These essential fatty acids are responsible for our immune response. In the old country the peasants ate hemp butter. They were more resistant to disease then nobility. The higher classes wouldn't eat hemp because the poor ate it."
-R Hamilton, ED.D., Phd. Medical Researcher- Biochemist UCLA. Emeritus
LA and LNA possess a slightly negative charge and have a tendency to form thin surface layers This property is called surface activity, and it provides the power to carry substances like toxins to the surface of the skin, intestinal tract, kidneys and lungs where they can be removed.
Their very sensitivity causes them to break down very rapidly into toxic compounds when refined with high heat or improper storage exposes them to light or air.
Nature provides seeds with an outer shell that safely protects the vital oils and vitamins within from spoilage. It's a perfect as well as perfectly edible container. Hempseed can be ground into a paste similar to peanut butter only more delicate in flavour. Udo Erasmus, Ph.D. nutritionist says: "hemp butter puts our peanut butter to shame for nutritional value. The ground seeds can be baked into breads, cakes and casseroles. Hempseed makes a hearty addition to granola bars."
Pioneers in the fields at chemistry and human nutrition now believe cardiovascular disease (CYD) and most cancers are really disease of fatty degeneration caused by the continued over-consumption of saturated fats and refined vegetable oils that turn essential fatty acids into carcinogenic killers. One out of four Americans will die from cancer. Researchers believe cancers erupt when immune system response is weakened.
More Americans are succumbing to immune deficiency disease than ever before. Promising studies are now under way using the essential oils to support the immune systems of KIV virus patients.
The complete protein in hempseed gives the body all the essential amino acids required to maintain health, and provides the necessary kinds and amounts of amino acids the body needs to make human serum albumin serum globulins antibodies.
The body's ability to resist and recover from illness depends upon how rapidly it can produce massive amounts of antibody to fend of the initial attack. If the globulin protein starting material is in short supply the army of antibodies may be to small to prevent the symptoms of sickness from setting in. The best way to ensure the body enough amino acid material to make the globulins is to eat foods high in globulin proteins. Hempseed protein is 65% globulin edestin plus quantities of albumin (present in all seeds) so its easily digestible protein is readily available in a form quite similar to that found in blood plasma.
"Hempseed was used to treat nutritional deficiencies brought on by tuberculosis, a severe nutrition blocking disease that causes the body to waste away. "
-(Czechoslovakia Tubercular Nutritional Study.1955.)
The energy of life is in the whole seed. Hempseed foods taste great and will insure we get enough essential amino acids and essential fatty acids to build a strong bodies and immune systems, and to maintain health and vitality.
Therapeutic Hemp Oil (Excerpted from Therapeutic Hemp Oil by: Andrew Weil, M.D.)
The nutritional composition of oil from the marijuana plant
could be beneficial to your health. To most people, Cannabis sativa is
synonymous with marijuana, but the plant's Latin name means the "useful
hemp." Species designated sativa (useful) are usually among the most
important of all crops. In fact, the utility of hemp is manifold: the plant
has provided human beings with fiber, edible seeds, an edible oil, and
medicine, not just a notorious mind-altering drug.
In our part of
the world, these other uses of hemp are no longer familiar. We rarely use
hemp fiber and know little about hemp medicine. (Some cancer patients have
found it to be a superior remedy for the nausea caused by chemotherapy, and
some people with multiple sclerosis are grateful for its relaxant effects on
spastic muscles.) Hemp seed is sometimes an ingredient in bird food;
otherwise, edible products from Cannabis sativa are virtually
unknown.
Hemp seeds
contain 25% high quality protein and 40% fat in the form of an excellent
quality oil. Hemp oil is just now coming on the market. It has a remarkable
fatty acid profile, being high in the desirable omega-3s and also delivering
some GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) that is absent from the fats we normally
eat. Nutritionally oriented doctors believe all of these compounds to be
beneficial to health.
Like flax oil, hemp oil should be
stored in the refrigerator, used quickly, and never heated. Unlike flax oil,
hemp oil also provides 1.7% gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). There is controversy
about the value of adding this fatty acid to the diet, but many people take
supplements of it in the form of capsules of evening primrose oil, black
currant oil, and borage oil. It simulates growth
of hair and nails, improves the health of the skin, and can reduce
inflammation. It also supplies both
omega-3s and GLA, without the need to take more capsules.
One of the
questions that people are sure to ask about hemp oil is whether it has any
psychoactivity. The answer is no. The intoxicating properties of
Cannabis sativa reside in a sticky resin produced most abundantly in the
flowering tops of female plants before the seeds mature. The main
psychoactive compound in this resin is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Strains of hemp grown for oil production have a low resin content to
begin with, and by the time the seeds are ready for harvest, resin
production has dropped even further. Finally, the seeds must be cleaned and
washed before they are pressed. As a result, no THC is found in the final
product.
